How to Flush Your Water Heater (Step-by-Step DIY Guide)

Sediment is the silent killer of water heaters. Flushing your tank once a year is the single best thing you can do to prevent leaks and improve efficiency. Here is how to do it safely.

Safety First

  • Gas: Turn the thermostat knob to 'Pilot' or 'Off'.
  • Electric: Turn off the breaker for the water heater at your electrical panel. (Crucial! If the element turns on while the tank is empty, it will burn out instantly).

The Process

1. Connect a Garden Hose: Attach a standard hose to the drain valve at the bottom of the tank. Run the other end to a floor drain or outside.
2. Turn Off Cold Water: Shut off the cold water supply valve at the top of the tank.
3. Open a Hot Faucet: Turn on a hot water faucet somewhere in the house (like a sink) to prevent a vacuum from forming.
4. Open the Drain Valve: Let the water flow out. Be careful—it will be hot! Let it run until the water runs clear and free of sediment.
5. Flush: Turn the cold water supply on for a few seconds to stir up remaining sediment, then let it drain again.
6. Close Up: Close the drain valve, disconnect the hose, and turn the cold water supply back on. Wait for the tank to fill completely (water flows from your open sink faucet) before turning the power/gas back on.
