Should you drain a water heater when not in use?

Water heaters are expensive and must be maintained well, one way of doing this is to drain your water heater when not in use because sediment inside the tank can block the spigot. If you have the experience, confidence and the right tools you can follow the below steps to drain the heater yourself.

What you’ll need?

  • Garden hose
  • A wet or dry vacuum

Steps

  • The first turn of the water supply
  • Turn off the heater thermostat.
  • Let the heater cool down
  • Connect the hose to the tank’s drain valve
  • Open the faucets and the drain valve. You can also try opening the temperature-pressure release valve to let off some pressure that’ll help to drain the heater further.
  • Use a wet/dry vacuum to suck the blockage out. Please use a glove to protect your hands
  • Turn the water supply on again to rinse of few sediments
  • Remove the hose from the valve, and use the vacuum to clean its opening.
  • Leave the faucets open until it flows clear water, and then close it back
  • Reset the thermostat

Can a water heater explode?

Although it is uncommon, both electric and gas water heaters can explode If the temperature is too high or the pressure relief valve malfunctions.
