Black Iron vs. CSST: Understanding Gas Piping Materials
Gas Line
If you look at the gas pipes in your basement or attic, you'll likely see one of two materials.
Black Iron Pipe
This is the traditional, rigid black steel pipe you see in older homes.
- Pros: Extremely durable and resistant to physical damage.
- Cons: Heavy, difficult to install (requires threading machines), and has many joints that can potentially leak.
CSST (Corrugated Stainless Steel Tubing)
This is a flexible, yellow-coated stainless steel tube that snakes through walls like an electrical wire.
- Pros: Fewer joints (less chance of leaks), faster installation, and flexible enough to withstand earthquake movement.
- Cons: Must be properly bonded (grounded) to prevent damage from lightning strikes.
Our Verdict
We often use a hybrid approach—Black Iron for exposed main trunks and CSST for running lines through tight walls to appliances.
