Water Meter Test: How to Check for Leaks Yourself
Leak Detection
If you suspect a leak but can't find a puddle, use your water meter to confirm it. This test is 100% accurate.
The Step-by-Step Test
1. Shut It Down: Turn off every faucet, dishwasher, and washing machine. Make sure no toilets are running.
2. Locate the Meter: Go to your water meter box (usually near the street). Open the lid.
3. Check the Flow Indicator: Most meters have a small red triangle or a silver gear wheel. If it is spinning even slightly while everything is off, you have a leak.
4. The 2-Hour Wait: If the dial isn't moving, write down the exact numbers on the odometer. Wait two hours (do not use water!). Check again. If the numbers changed, you have a very slow leak (likely a toilet or pinhole leak).
