Pedestal vs. Submersible Sump Pumps: Which is Better?

Sump Pumps
Submersible sump pump
When replacing a sump pump, you'll see two distinct designs.

Submersible Pumps

The motor is sealed inside a waterproof housing and sits at the very bottom of the pit, underwater.
  • Pros: Quieter (water muffles the sound), more powerful, saves space in the pit, and generally lasts longer because the water cools the motor.
  • Cons: More expensive and harder to access for repairs.

Pedestal Pumps

The motor sits on a tall stalk above the pit, while the impeller sits in the water.
  • Pros: Cheaper, easy to access for service, and the float switch is easy to adjust.
  • Cons: Much louder, takes up floor space, and the motor isn't as powerful.

Our Recommendation

Unless you have a very narrow pit, a Submersible Pump is the superior choice for modern homes.
