What to Do If You Smell Gas (Safety Protocol)
Gas Line
Natural gas is odorless, but utility companies add a chemical called mercaptan to give it that distinctive 'rotten egg' smell. If you smell it, you have a leak.
Immediate Actions
- Evacuate Immediately: Get everyone, including pets, out of the house. Leave the door open behind you.
- Do Not Touch Anything Electrical: Do not flip light switches, use a landline phone, or even use your cell phone inside the house. A tiny spark can ignite the gas.
- Do Not Start Your Car: If your car is in the garage, leave it there. Starting the engine can cause a spark.
- Call 911 or Your Utility Company: Once you are a safe distance away (across the street), make the call.
