How to Test Your Sump Pump Before Storm Season
Sump Pumps
Sump pumps sit idle for months, which can cause internal parts to seize up. It is crucial to test your system in the spring (before April showers) and fall.
The 5-Minute Test
- 1. Check the Outlet: Ensure the cord is plugged in securely and the GFCI outlet hasn't tripped.
- 2. Clear Debris: Remove the pit cover and fish out any rocks, gravel, or debris that could jam the impeller.
- 3. The Water Test: Slowly pour a 5-gallon bucket of water into the sump pit.
- 4. Watch the Float: As the water level rises, the float switch should lift up.
- 5. Listen: The pump should kick on instantly, drain the water quickly, and shut off with a distinct 'thump' (the check valve closing). If it doesn't turn on, you likely have a bad float switch.
