Toilet Won't Flush? Try These 3 Tricks Before Calling a Pro
Toilet Repair
When the water starts rising instead of draining, don't panic. Most minor clogs can be cleared without professional tools.
1. The Right Plunger Technique
Use a flange plunger (the one with the extra rubber flap at the bottom), not a cup plunger.
- Make sure there is enough water to cover the plunger cup.
- Insert the plunger to create a tight seal over the drain hole.
- Push down gently to release air, then pull up and push down vigorously. The suction is what clears the clog, not just the pushing.
2. Hot Water and Dish Soap
If you don't have a plunger:
- Pour 1/2 cup of dish soap into the bowl.
- Add a bucket of hot (not boiling) water from waist height.
- Wait 20 minutes. The soap lubricates the pipe, and the water weight pushes the clog down.
3. The Wire Hanger
Unwind a wire coat hanger and wrap a rag around the end (to prevent scratching the porcelain). Gently feed it into the drain to break up obstructions near the surface.
