Why Does My Water Taste Like Chlorine?
Water Filtration
If your morning glass of water tastes like you dipped it out of a public pool, your local water treatment plant is likely using high levels of chlorine or chloramines to disinfect the city supply.
Is it Safe?
Yes, the EPA regulates chlorine levels to ensure water is safe to drink. However, safe doesn't mean pleasant.
Why it Happens
Water travels miles through pipes to reach your home. Cities add chlorine to ensure no bacteria grows during that journey. Homes closer to the treatment plant often have higher residual chlorine levels.
How to Remove It
- Carbon Filtration: Activated carbon is highly effective at adsorbing chlorine. A simple under-sink filter or a whole-house carbon filter will remove the taste and smell instantly.
- Let it Sit: Chlorine is a gas. If you fill a pitcher and let it sit open in the fridge for 24 hours, much of the chlorine will evaporate naturally.
