Why is My Garbage Disposal Humming but Not Spinning?

If you flip the switch and hear a low hum or buzz, but the disposal doesn't grind, turn it off immediately. The flywheel is jammed. If you leave it humming, the motor will overheat and burn out within seconds.

1. Cut the Power: Unplug the unit or flip the breaker.

2. Find the Hex Hole: Look under the sink at the very bottom center of the disposal unit. There is a small hexagonal hole.

3. Crank It: Insert an Allen wrench (hex key) into the hole. Crank it back and forth vigorously. This manually turns the flywheel and breaks the jam.

4. Reset: Press the small red button on the bottom (the overload protector), turn the water on, and try again.
