How to Reset a Garbage Disposal in 30 Seconds

If you turn on your disposal and hear absolutely nothing—no hum, no grind—don't buy a new one yet. The internal overload protector has likely tripped to save the motor from overheating.
The Reset Procedure
- Turn Off the Switch: Make sure the wall switch is off.
- Look Under the Sink: Crawl under and look at the bottom of the disposal unit.
- Find the Red Button: You will see a small red button. If it is popped out about a quarter-inch, it is tripped.
- Push It In: Press the button firmly until it clicks and stays flush.
- Test: Turn on the cold water and flip the switch. It should roar back to life.
